Backend Software Engineer (Systems & Chromium Infrastructure)
Posted May 6, 2026
Who We Are:
We build infrastructure that delivers massive amounts of web data to the companies training the world’s most powerful AI models.
We're the team that helps to power and support Grass, a bandwidth-sharing network that lets us operate a massive distributed crawler, giving us unique access to high-quality public web data at global scale. On top of that, we’ve built pipelines for ingesting, segmenting, and annotating billions of videos, transcripts, and audio files, powering dataset creation for frontier labs.
We’re lean, technical, and move fast. No red tape, no slow decision-making; just a team of builders pushing to expand what’s possible for open web data and AI.
The Role
As our resident Chromium expert, you will be responsible for the birth, life, and evolution of our custom browser fork. This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role where you will bridge the gap between low-level systems engineering and scalable backend infrastructure.
Your mission includes:
Architecting the Fork: Designing and building a custom Chromium-based browser tailored to Wynd’s specific networking and performance requirements.
Upstream Mastery: Managing the relentless intake of upstream Chromium releases. You’ll be the gatekeeper, ensuring our custom patches play nice with the latest Google updates.
Stability & Triage: Owning the "crash-to-resolution" pipeline. You’ll analyze crash dumps, triage issues in the field, and implement robust fixes to ensure five-nines of stability.
Workflow Engineering: Building the CI/CD and QA infrastructure required to compile, test, and deploy a massive C++ codebase across multiple platforms.
Performance Optimization: Identifying bottlenecks within the browser engine and optimizing C/C++ code for maximum efficiency and minimal resource footprint.
What We’re Looking For
C/C++ Mastery: You have extensive experience writing high-performance, memory-safe code in C and C++. You understand the "why" behind the language, not just the "how."
Chromium Experience: You’ve spent significant time inside the Chromium project (or similar large-scale forks like Brave, Edge, or Electron). You are familiar with GN, Ninja, Blink, and V8.
Systems Intuition: You understand operating system internals (Linux/Windows/macOS), memory management, and multi-process architectures.
The "Rebase" Mental Strength: Experience managing complex Git workflows, specifically handling large-scale upstream merges and conflict resolutions.
Infrastructure Mindset: You don't just want to fix a bug; you want to build a test suite that ensures that bug never comes back. You’re comfortable with automated QA and deployment pipelines.
Bonus Points
Experience with Rust (we love modern systems languages).
Contributions to the Chromium Open Source Project.
A background in network protocol engineering or proxy infrastructure.
Strong opinions on build systems and compiler optimizations.
Why Work With Us:
Opportunity. We are at the forefront of developing a web-scale crawler and knowledge graph that improves access to public web data and extends the value of AI to the people.
Culture. We're a lean team with a high bar. We come to work not to be comfortable, but to find out what we're capable of and to do work that matters. We're not calling for people who keep things moving. We're calling for people who make everyone around them better.
We prioritize low ego and high output. This is a fully remote team.Compensation. You’ll receive a competitive salary, benefits and equity package.
